It's common sense that you NEVER open up any links or files sent to you by unknown personnages, but time and again you can be caught off guard. Here is the contents of a note sent my way just today:

"OMG! you're a GENIUS! Why don't you join the poetry contest from [link] ? Free to enter, 100k prizes. You MUST win it!"

At first, I was flattered, but as the note was from a banned deviant a little alarm bell went off in my head (and that I also have like... ONE poem in my gallery was stranger still). The link itself pointed to a site called tinyurl.com with a bit of code at the end-- a Wikipedia search explained that it was sometimes used by spammers to disguise malicious sites.

But just to be sure, I previewed the link by sticking in preview in front of the URL, and it showed me a site called clickboothlnk. The second hit on Google was a forum post pretty much detailing how it rooted a bunch of hard-to-remove adware into the user's system like the Aurora software some three to five years ago.

Moral of the story, kiddies: Make SURE you know who's sending you what stuff, no matter how much they try to sugarcoat it-- and if you get presented something strange, do your homework before accepting it into your computer.

Oh, no, it was like...futureartcritic, but they were definitely a banned deviant, which automatically make me go "whoa, um? no"

You've gotta watch out for TinyURL...although it's extremely useful (especially for those blasted Youtube links which dA likes to break), it can definitely hide something malicious too. :bucktooth:

Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

I got the same one, but the thought of internet spam didn't flicker into my head. I angrily shut my laptop and said outloud: "HOW DARE YOU NOTE ME!! YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LIKE NOTES!!". My roommate conducted an investigation of my outburst quickly afterward.
